There are three different types of signs regulating parking in Belgium:
The sign (E1) represented by a blue circle surrounded by a crossed red circle indicates the prohibition of parking in the street where it is located.
This sign (E3), represented by a blue circle surrounded by a red circle with a red cross, indicates that stopping and parking are prohibited in the street where it is located. You will find more information about the difference between stopping and parking here.
This sign (E9a) represented by the white letter P on a blue background indicates that parking is allowed.
Parking forbidden
The sign (E1) represented by a blue circle surrounded by a crossed red circle indicates the prohibition of parking in the street where it is located.
This prohibition is permanent unless the sign is accompanied by another sign indicating the hours and/or days of prohibition.
Ex: Prohibition of parking from 7 to 19h.
Ex: No parking from Monday to Friday.
Variation: Parking prohibited alternately
The signs (E5 and E7) indicates an alternate parking ban. The prohibition dates will then be indicated on the sign.
No parking from the 1st to the 15th of the month.
No parking from the 16th to the 31st of the month.
These two signs may be accompanied by an additional sign:
Sign indicating that outside the prohibition dates, the disc must be used.
With the exception of people having a resident card when this same sign indicates "except residents".
An additional sign mentioning "paid" means that the parking is not free outside the forbidden parking dates.
With the exception of people having a resident card when this same sign indicates "except residents".
An additional sign representing a "black arrow on a white background" indicates the direction or distance of the regulation.
In case of non-compliance with the parking prohibition you risk a parking fine issued by the police. If you do not follow complementary signs, you risk a generally less expensive parking fee. You can find more information about it here.
